About Us

Founded in 1974, the Carolina Planning Journal is the oldest student-run planning journal in the nation, operating through the Department of City and Regional Planning at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Mission: The Carolina Planning Journal provides a high-quality forum for students, planners, and academics to discuss challenges and innovative solutions for planning in North Carolina, the United States, and the world. The Carolina Planning Journal publishes work through an annual journal, available in print and accessible online, and through short-form digital content.
Vision: The Carolina Planning Journal aspires to publish high-quality research that motivates and influences students, planners, and academics alike. It aims to capture the sentiments of young planners and early professionals by drawing from planning’s history and looking towards the future. The Carolina Planning Journal encourages student-driven works with innovative research methodologies and technologies as well as insights into how planning can best serve localities, regions, and beyond. Above all else, the Carolina Planning Journal seeks to stimulate academic inquiry and inspire professional action. Each year, these works will center around one broad theme to which all articles will relate.
